How to Invest in NPS: A Simple Guide for Every Professional

Daily finances being prioritised over long-term retirement planning is a common sight. However, a stable retirement corpus needs early, structured action. Understanding how to invest in NPS scheme can help you take that step in a disciplined and regulated manner. The National Pension System (NPS) is designed for long-term retirement savings. It offers flexible contributions, and supports both online and offline onboarding.

Why Should You Invest in NPS?

A well-articulated retirement plan focuses on long-term growth, hedging against inflation, and reducing direct and indirect taxes. The National Pension System addresses all three issues. Under the active choice option, you can allocate up to 75% of your corpus to equity funds and continue this allocation until the age of 60/retirement, which enables long-term capital growth. In contrast, under the Auto Choice, your equity exposure gradually reduces as you grow older. This shift towards conservative debt funds provides stability as you approach retirement.

NPS is highly regarded for its cost-efficient structure, with Investment Management Fees (IMF) that are among the lowest in the financial sector. Effective 1 April 2026, these fees are tiered, beginning at 0.12% per annum for the initial AUM slab and decreasing to just 0.04% for larger fund sizes. From a tax perspective, the Income Tax Act 2025/2026 allows for total deductions of up to ₹2 lakh (₹1.5 lakh under Section 124(1)6 of the Act and an additional ₹50,000 under Section 124(3)1 of the Income-tax Act, 20252) for those opting for the Old Tax Regime. For those under the New Tax Regime, tax benefits are primarily available through employer contributions under Section 124(1)3 of the Act.

Eligibility to Invest in NPS

Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 85 can open an NPS account. There is no minimum income requirement. You may subscribe as a salaried employee, a self-employed professional, a homemaker, or through a corporate NPS model offered by your employers. The minimum contribution required to open a NPS Tier 1 account is ₹500.

Documents Required to Start Investing in NPS

Before you begin investing in NPS, you will require the following documents:

  • Permanent Account Number (PAN Card): A PAN card is mandatory for your financial identification.
  • Aadhaar Card: Your Aadhaar card will be used for e-KYC and faster onboarding.
  • Proof of Identity and Address: Submit proof of identity, such as a passport, a driving licence, or a voter ID, if Aadhaar-based authentication is unavailable.
  • Bank Account Details: Provide a cancelled cheque or passbook showing the IFSC and account number for offline or non-Aadhaar modes.
  • Photograph and Signature: Your photograph and signature must be in digital format for online applications.

Once you have gathered these items, you can proceed to the next stage.

Types of NPS Accounts for Investment

NPS offers you two account types, each of which serves a distinct purpose.

NPS Tier 1 Account

The NPS Tier 1 account is a mandatory retirement account and serves as the core of the National Pension System. While traditionally considered “locked-in” until age 60, the system offers defined liquidity through exits and partial withdrawals.

  • Premature Exit: If you choose to close your Tier 1 account before age 60 (or superannuation), you must have completed 10 years of subscription (for non-government sectors). In a premature exit, you can withdraw up to 20% of the corpus as a lump sum, while the remaining 80% must be used to purchase an annuity. If the total corpus is ₹5 lakh or less, a 100% lump-sum withdrawal is permitted.
  • Partial Withdrawals: After 3 years of membership, you may withdraw up to 25% of your own contributions for specific needs (e.g., education, marriage, property purchase, or critical illness). This facility can be used up to 4 times during the account’s lifetime, with a minimum gap of 4 years between successive withdrawals.
  • Minimum Contribution: To keep the account active, a minimum contribution of ₹1,000 per financial year is mandatory.
  • Account Reactivation: If an account is frozen due to non-contribution, it can be reactivated by paying a ₹100 penalty plus the minimum contribution (₹1,000) for each year of default.

NPS Tier 2 Account

The NPS Tier 2 account is a voluntary, high-liquidity savings instrument that allows for withdrawals at any time without restrictions.

  • Tax Treatment: Tier 2 investments generally do not offer tax benefits. However, Central Government employees can claim deductions under Section 123 read with Schedule XV of the Income-tax Act, 2025(under the Old Tax Regime) provided they opt for a mandatory three-year lock-in period.
  • Account Prerequisite: You must have an active Tier 1 account to open or maintain a Tier 2 account.
  • Minimum Contribution: The initial contribution to open the account is ₹1,000, with subsequent transactions requiring a minimum of ₹250. There is no mandatory annual contribution requirement for Tier 2.

Due to its competitive cost structure and liquidity, Tier 2 is often utilized for short-to-medium-term wealth accumulation alongside the primary retirement corpus.
